This was our TV situation. *sigh*
I was used to having only two and a half channels to watch;
CBS and NBC were all I needed.
(PBS could be found only in the winter when the trees were bare and only then when we turned our rabbit ears on their side, propped up with a chair.)
But now, due to the powers that be.... (Gee, thanks ya big digital TV switch!)
We have nothing. No news. No stupid sitcoms. No reality TV.
The Radio Shack guy laughed at me when I said I needed some new rabbit-ears to go along with our new-fangled converter box. (It just doesn't work!!!)
Turns out it won't help us in the boonies.
(The Dish Network guy laughed at us, too.)
It wasn't so bad at first.
I actually enjoyed finding better things to do with my time.
And then I found that Hulu had NOVA,
and I was a happy (and slightly more intelligent) camper.
But then I became a little more desperate, and I bought a season pass to "How to Look Good Naked" from iTunes.
(Have you seen it? Carson what's-his-name is so FUNNY!)
And then came the news of a Serial Killer loose not too terribly far away from where I live. Hmmm.
Thank goodness that's over with, but I NEED TV!!!
I need to come home from a long day and watch the news, no matter how depressing it is. I really just need it for the background noise if anything.
As far back as I can remember, supper-time meant that the news was on TV.
It's comforting in a way.
It's like the sound of the dishwasher which to me is a relaxing sound that reminds me of my mom when I was still at home...
...Dinner was finished, the dishes were washing, and everyone would relax and watch a stupid sitcom on TV.
Girl, I totally get it. I grapple with shame about my attachment and need for TV, but it's just a part of being at home and relaxed. Alas.
ReplyDeleteNo more shame! That doesn't really solve your "boonie" problem, but I feel better.
My name is Kelly. I love TV and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
ReplyDeleteA digital converter box won't help? I thought that's what all the cool antenna-kids were getting!

Or, pay $18-ish/month and get a Netflix account. When you're not watching DVDs, you can watch a lot of movies/TV shows instantly on your computer. I just finished Seasons 1 and 2 of Weeds and am now getting into a British sitcom called The IT Crowd. Won't help your news needs, though. :)
